An incredible experience and the owners are very friendly. Good activity to do with friends or family, a lot of fun. My experience was in the insane hospital but I still have to go back to do the prison experience. I hope they are very successful so they can create more rooms and more challenges, a horror one would be perfect 😅

More about Nuthouse

Nuthouse is set inside an abandoned psychiatric hospital that closed under circumstances the official records don’t fully explain — and the sets, sound design, and lighting are all built to make sure you feel that the moment you walk in.

What to expect inside Nuthouse

Nuthouse is a medium-difficulty thriller for 2-6 players, running around 60 minutes. It leans further into atmosphere and unease than Prison, without going as far as full horror — a good next step once your group has one escape room under its belt.

The story behind the room

Patient records are missing, one ward is sealed off entirely, and the staff who worked here left in a hurry. Your team has to piece together what actually happened before the hospital’s last secret catches up with you.

Who this room is for

Nuthouse suits groups who’ve played at least one escape room before and want more tension without a full horror experience. It’s a popular pick for friend groups and teams looking for something with more edge than a beginner room.

Booking Nuthouse in Funchal

Nuthouse is one of three escape rooms at Cryptic Room in Funchal, Madeira, alongside Prison and Hannibal. Book online, or check our FAQ page for details before you visit.

The atmosphere

Sound and lighting do a lot of the work in Nuthouse — flickering lights, distant noises, and a soundtrack that builds tension without ever feeling cheap. It’s designed to unsettle rather than shock.

Difficulty and pacing

Puzzles in Nuthouse require closer attention to detail than Prison — clues are woven into the environment rather than sitting in plain sight, which rewards groups who communicate well and split up to search.

A step up for returning guests

Guests who’ve already played Prison often book Nuthouse next as a natural step up in intensity, before eventually taking on Hannibal once they’re ready for our hardest room.

What to wear

Closed, comfortable shoes are recommended for Nuthouse, the same as our other rooms — you’ll be moving through tight spaces and occasionally kneeling to search for clues.

Booking for a group

Nuthouse is a strong choice for friend groups, birthdays, and team outings looking for a bit more edge than a standard escape room. Larger groups can split across rooms and compare times afterwards.

A room that rewards a second visit

Guests who’ve already played Nuthouse tell us details reveal themselves differently on a second visit, once you already know the overall shape of the story.

What comes next

Once you’ve escaped Nuthouse, most guests move on to Hannibal for the hardest challenge we offer, or come back to try Prison if they started here first.

Book Nuthouse today and see for yourself why it’s one of the most talked-about rooms at Cryptic Room.

Nuthouse rewards groups who pay attention to atmosphere as much as puzzles — don’t just search, listen too.

See you inside Nuthouse soon, if you dare.

A room worth remembering

Nuthouse leaves an impression that goes beyond the puzzles themselves, the atmosphere is what most guests remember weeks later.

Whichever room you play first, Nuthouse is the one most guests say they think about days later.

Book now and step inside Nuthouse for yourself.

Escape while you still can.

Good luck.

The clock is ticking.

Like every escape room built since the format took off in the early 2010s, Nuthouse relies on a locked space, a story, and a countdown.
