For the last four years, we've been designing escape rooms with real sets, real props, and stories built to hold together under pressure — not just a room full of locks.
We don't license puzzles or reuse other companies' sets — every room is designed and built in-house. Right now we run three rooms, in the horror and thriller genres, with more planned.
We've also built online versions of our games, so groups who can't visit in person can still play from a browser.
We're not actively hiring right now, but we're always glad to meet designers, game masters, and writers who share our obsession with the craft.
Get in touchAbout us: Cryptic Room opened in Funchal with a single room and a simple idea: build the kind of set design you’d expect from a film, not a converted storage unit with a padlock on the wall. That first room proved there was real demand for escape rooms on Madeira, and we’ve since grown to three themed rooms plus a set of online escape games.
Every room passes through the same small team of writers, set designers, and game masters — the same people, room after room, refining details most guests never consciously notice but definitely feel. That’s what keeps the standard consistent from our very first room to the newest one.
Funchal’s mix of local residents and year-round tourism means every room gets played by a genuine variety of people — some on their first-ever escape room, some who’ve played dozens elsewhere. We also run corporate events and kids’ birthday parties for groups who want the same format built around their occasion.
All three rooms are built for 2-6 players and run about an hour. Check our FAQ page for arrival times, age limits and booking details, or head straight to our escape rooms to pick one.
Growing from a single room to three meant growing the team behind them too — writers, set designers, and game masters who could keep pace with the standard we’d set from day one. That’s still how we hire today.
We’ve expanded into online escape games for groups who can’t make it to Funchal in person, and we regularly add new puzzles and stories to what we offer.
Alongside individual and group bookings, we run corporate team building for companies and birthday parties for kids — the same puzzle-solving format, built around a specific occasion.
Being first on the island came with a responsibility to keep raising the bar rather than resting on it — every new room has to justify being part of the same company that opened the very first one.
Cryptic Room was chosen as a name that reflects exactly what we build — puzzles worth solving, wrapped in a story worth remembering, rather than a generic “escape room” label.
Guests who book a corporate event or a repeat visit often end up chatting with the same game masters they met on a previous visit — a small team means familiar faces, not a rotating cast.
We use that word deliberately — every room is scored, lit, and paced the way a short film would be, not just decorated to look busy.
Every claim we make about a room — difficulty, theme, duration — is something our own team has tested repeatedly, not just marketing copy written to sound exciting.
Although based in Funchal, we welcome guests from across Madeira and visitors staying anywhere on the island — booking online works the same regardless of where you’re travelling from.
The best way to understand what makes Cryptic Room different is to book a room and experience the pacing, the story, and the puzzles firsthand.
Three rooms in, we’re still treating every new build as if it has to earn the right to carry the Cryptic Room name.
We hope this gives a real sense of who we are — come experience it for yourself.
Cryptic Room follows the same core escape room format that has grown worldwide since the early 2010s, built our own way.
